Those of us who have a family member with paws, or maybe feathers or hooves, already know how these wonderful creatures enhance our well-being. In addition to giving us unconditional love, they also help us on an emotional level by actually decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. Studies show that they also help lower our blood pressure, decrease our risk of heart attack and stroke, and improve our immune system.
Researchers found in a 2002 test at State University of New York at Buffalo that when conducting a stressful task people actually experienced less stress when with their pets were with them than when they were with a close friend, family member and even a spouse. Wow! And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) our blood pressure is lower when we have a pet around. The CDC also says that having a pet can actually lower your cholesterol. Men especially have significantly lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels than those who don’t have pets.
Having little ones with paws simply improves our lives. Come on, it’s great to come home and be welcomed joyfully and treated like you are the most fantastic, beautiful person on earth. Let’s all admit it. And you can’t beat the rubs, licks, happy faces, and excitement that are always there for you just because you are you.
While all these benefits, and there are so many more than those mentioned above, are wonderful it is important to only have a family member of another species if you are in it for their whole life. They are so dependent on us for love and survival. It is heartbreaking to see how many people “turn in” these little ones after having them a short or a long time. So if you feel it is time for paws, be sure you are committed for the long term. I can’t imagine you would regret it.
