Feeling real gratitude in your heart daily means taking nothing for granted, and knowing things are not done for you as a matter of course. The importance of feeling a sense of gratitude on a regular basis can’t be overstated. Research on the nature of gratitude suggests it has the potential to positively impact our physical, emotional and mental well-being. This is because gratitude naturally results in positive feelings of appreciation for what we have in our lives.
There are a number of ways we can include gratitude in our lives routinely, including:
- Keep a gratitude journal, at least on a weekly basis. This not only makes you feel positive in the present, but it is there to review when going through a challenging time.
- Be alert and cognizant of the positive things that happen daily, and generate positive actions yourself. Compliment a friend, help someone out with something, or simply talk with a friend who is going through a tough time. Sometimes just having someone listen relieves stress.
- Really recognize and appreciate what you have. Most of us have a roof over our head and food on the table. Those things we consider basic, are things many others in this world do not possess.
- When meeting with a friend, rather than share the stresses of the day, discuss the wonderful things in your lives. Talk about what the best part of your day was and what makes you really happy.
One of my favorite movies is “The Secret” which is about the Law of Attraction. If you have not seen this movie, it is really worth watching. The Law of Attraction states that what you think and talk about will be drawn into your life. Your thoughts become your life. This makes sense to me and if it is true, having daily thoughts about the things you are grateful for will only draw more of those things into your life. And wouldn’t that be wonderful?
